The Book of Poole Harbour

Poole Harbour has long been in need of a comprehensive illustrated account of its remarkable history. That this first book on the Harbour ever to be published is the work of 30 authors, all of them authorities on aspects of its story, and that it contains over 300 illustrations, many of them in colour, is a tribute to the richness and diversity of the Harbour itself. It may only be 8650 acres in area, but it is one of the most fascinating and beautiful places in Britain, as well as being of international importance for its landscapes and wildlife. Studio title : Poole Harbour Naval Home

Rationale

Unit 10 will endeavour to investigate the architectural possibilities of the notion of ‘place’ in relation to land and water networks based at Poole Harbour

Poole Harbour is claimed to be the world largest natural inland harbour and as such it plays a key role on its inhabitants. With most of the employment dependent on the Harbour and as such it plays a key role on its inhabitants. With most the employment dependent on the harbour, the relationship between people, water and land is key. Unit 10 will examine how the rich cultural history of homing, trade and naval engineering shapes this shifting terrain and evokes new architectural and urban typologies, with both pragmatic and symbolic possibilities.

Semester 1:

Unit 10 will research the complex interwoven fabric of the site and the key relationship between land and water, which leads to ship industry, trade, migration and trans-culturation ( the introduction of foreign elements in an established culture) of home-making un Poole. The studio will also investigate the potential of the “technology transfer’’ of ship design/building into architecture.

Semester 2:

The ideas will develop for a meaningful programmatic intervention in Poole Harbour which acts as a metropolitan enclave. The Project should show evidence of the incorporation of the knowledge gained from the previous semester 1, as well as a synergetic strategy that embodies the Project Brief with a creative and inventive environmental agenda that extends beyond the current “established solutions” into a world of unknown architectures, urbanism and new social systems!
